A client with roots in both Medan and Bali commissioned WE Arsitek for a mixed-use project on the island: residential quarters above a commercial ground floor, on a 200 m² footprint. The brief asked for Balinese context without literal ornamentation — a building that belongs there, not one that announces a mainland architect.

The Concept

Balinese context without pastiche. A clean structural order that lets the site’s natural character — light, air, landscape — do the architectural work.

Background

BOE Bali is WE Arsitek’s first completed project on the island, and one of the practice’s furthest from the Medan base. The project tested whether the construction discipline that defines WE Arsitek’s Medan work — tight documentation, strong contractor management, no drift from the approved design — could hold when the site is 2,500 km away.

Design Challenge

Managing construction quality on a Bali site from a Medan office. Material sourcing on the island differs from North Sumatra; contractor networks are different; inspection visits are more consequential when they are less frequent. Every drawing had to be comprehensive enough that the contractor needed no guesswork.

Architecture Solution

WE Arsitek invested heavily in the construction documentation phase — more detailed drawings than a locally supervised project would require, supplemented by regular remote coordination and timed site visits at key milestones. The design itself was stripped to a clear structural logic that reduced the probability of execution error on site.

Outcome

BOE Bali was completed in 2024, on schedule and to the approved design. The construction discipline held over 2,500 km. The client got the building they briefed — on an island they love, built to the same standard they expected from WE Arsitek in Medan.
