The brief was clear: clean geometry, generous natural light, a material palette that ages well and needs minimal maintenance, and spaces that behave exactly as they appear on the plan.

Clarity through restraint. Strong lines, honest materials, and spaces that feel exactly as large as the plan intended — nothing added beyond what the brief required.

Background

Citraland Gama City is a tightly planned premium residential estate in Medan with consistent setbacks and a shared architectural register. Most houses within it default to the same vocabulary. The opportunity for W House was to work within the regulations and still produce something that reads as resolved and considered rather than generic.

Design Challenge

Building a 400 m² home that feels open and spacious without relying on glass-wall transparency or a large footprint — and differentiating the facade from its neighbours through material discipline rather than decorative layering. Every detail had to earn its presence.

Architecture Solution

The plan is organised around a central double-height living zone flanked by service blocks that absorb the less desirable orientations. The facade deploys two materials — board-formed concrete and anodised aluminium joinery — with no applied decoration. Light enters through calibrated openings rather than floor-to-ceiling glass.

Outcome

A house that reads as calm and intentional from the street and feels more spacious inside than its footprint suggests. The clients moved in on the handover date. Build tracked the budget and the approved drawings throughout.
